I honestly do not remember how I stumbled onto stick weaving. It is such a simple concept and requires only a few inexpensive supplies and some coordination. I learned weaving on simple tapestry looms because I did not want to get involved in all the complicated warping of a more elaborate loom. Stick weaving, however, is even easier. If you can hold the sticks in one hand and weave yarn through them with the other hand, you can stick weave.
Some websites claim that stick weaving is an ancient weaving method, but I was unable to find any archaeological evidence in my research about weaving around sticks in ancient Europe and the Mediterranean region. I did find some mention of this technique used in ancient North and South American cultures. Since my background is in Ancient European and Mediterranean history, I am not familiar with the research in the ancient Americas. If anyone has any good references, please contact me, I would love to learn more.
The technique was easy to learn. I bought a set of the Clover brand weaving sticks and they have a good video on how to use them. They come in thick and thin sizes. The sticks have a hole in one end and rounded points on the other. The idea is to run your warp yarns through the holes in the end then you use your weft yarns to weave through the sticks from the top (pointed end). As you work, you push the woven yarns down off the sticks and onto the warp yarns until you reach your desired length. The hardest part is holding all six sticks in one hand, but once you get the weaving started, it becomes easier to hold.
I used the same yarn for warp and weft and I am not positive this was a good idea, but I wanted a consistent color throughout the weave. It made the entire scarf rather stretchy and delicate feeling, even though it is still durable. I also found that fuzzier and curly yarns, like the one in the photos, are more difficult to push down over the weft and required more careful attention. Next time I will re-think my yarn choices, but these scarves were lovely in the end.
