I painted this sketchbook spread after journaling about our culture's obsession with increasing productivity and speed. The news media recently published a story about how artificial intelligence (AI) is so great because it will increase our productivity. Creativity, however, has never been about speed. Any artist who has ever practiced an art form, knows that the process of learning the materials and practicing the technique are paramount to mastery. This takes time and cannot be rushed. One does not become an artist overnight, nor does one become an artist by using AI to make the process faster.
We need to remove ourselves from the idea that life (and creativity) is a race to the finish line. I don't know about you, but I do not want to be the first one to the end of the race. The end is, well, the end.
This sketchbook page spread represents my slow meditation on the spaciousness, directionality, and flow of the creative process.
